QuSecure CEO Rebecca Krauthamer Featured on Dark Reading: FCC Router Ban

On March 23, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) expanded its Covered List to include a ban on new foreign-made consumer router models, citing cybersecurity and national security risks.

In a recently published Dark Reading article, Rebecca Krauthamer, CEO and Co-Founder of QuSecure, shares insights on the long-term impact and effects of the FCC’s router ban.

Most U.S. consumer and commercial routers are manufactured abroad. The FCC’s action also aims at reducing geopolitical exposure and decreasing the reliance on foreign-controlled infrastructure. At the national security level, the supply chain risk is real. Rebecca emphasizes:

“We are seeing a broader shift toward sovereign and trusted technology stacks in higher-security environments. When highly sensitive data is traversing or exposed to infrastructure components, origin truly does become a meaningful consideration.”

With the U.S. still largely dependent on imported routers, the FCC router ban raises concerns about when organizations and businesses will upgrade their infrastructure, as well as the resulting security risks.

“The policy does not force immediate replacement, but it does raise the stakes on getting replacement right when the time comes. As businesses go to upgrade or replace infrastructure, they are likely to face a more constrained and potentially more expensive market, with fewer approved options and longer procurement cycles.”

In addition, some security experts say operational factors cause most vulnerabilities rather than where the device is manufactured. This highlights poor operational security maintenance as a key risk.

Although the immediate impact remains limited, the FCC’s router ban draws attention to the long-term concerns about less secure networks. Furthermore, organizations may face additional challenges as they look to replace older routers and networking equipment.
